During the FIFA World Cup pre-match ceremony, Saudi Arabia’s national flag was kept elevated rather than placed on the ground, in line with the country’s religious and cultural protocol. The decision reflects the unique significance of the Saudi flag, which bears the Shahadah — the Islamic declaration of faith — making it distinct from many other national flags.
Because of its sacred inscription, the Saudi flag is treated with exceptional respect and is not allowed to touch the ground or water under any circumstances. To ensure fairness and maintain visual balance during the ceremony, Uruguay’s flag was also kept raised alongside it. The move was widely seen as an example of how international sporting events accommodate cultural and religious sensitivities while promoting mutual respect among nations.
